House of Yin Yoga Studio in Huron

House of Yin Yoga Studio

Sounds of rain pelting the transom window near my bed got me up and going early.  Seemed like the perfect morning to head over to House of Yin Yoga Studio in Huron to take their Saturday morning yoga class.

When I moved back to Ohio from California in 1999, I missed having a yoga studio nearby. In Encinitas, California where I lived for 20 years, there is a yoga studio on every corner and yoga classes in every fitness club. Back in 1999 in Erie County, there was a single yoga class taught once a week at BGSU Firelands.  The closest yoga studio to Huron was a 35 minute drive to Oberlin or you had to go into Cleveland for classes.

Today in Erie County, yoga classes are everywhere- in senior centers, parks, beaches, gyms and schools.  But studios dedicated to teaching yoga and dedicated, experienced teachers are still few and far between. Thankfully, House of Yin Yoga Studio is here, right in our own backyard.

A few years ago, a guy named Brian was visiting family in Huron and decided we needed a yoga studio in the area.  He rented a space on an upper floor of an old, brick building at 607 Main Street,  polished the wood floors, painted vibrant scenes on the walls, added some plants, wall hangings, Japanese lanterns and House of Yin was born.

Brian left Huron eventually and passed the studio on to a small group of devoted students. Several went to school to become certified yoga teachers. The first few years were a struggle. One student, turned teacher, was Patrick. He single-handedly kept the studio going for a couple of years by teaching 3 classes a week for no pay while also working a full-time job involving frequent travel.  I’m not sure how he managed it. He obviously loves yoga and wants to share that love with everyone who walks into the studio.

Many teachers and students have come and gone from House of Yin over the years but a core group of students along with Patrick, remain to support the studio. Brian, the House of Yin founder, also teaches classes whenever he’s in town.  Now that the studio is growing in popularity, more instructors and classes are on the House of Yin Yoga Studio schedule.

Patrick showed up to teach this morning’s class as he’s done every Saturday morning for the past few years- whether it’s raining, sweltering, snowing or freezing outside. It’s been awhile since I attended a class and it was great to see so many familiar faces. I walked in wired from my morning coffee and walked out feeling energetically mellow and ready to take on the day.

If you’ve ever taken a yoga class, you know what I mean. If you haven’t, check out House of Yin Yoga Studio and see what all the yoga buzz is about. We are lucky to have it here, right in our own backyard.
